Born in Vila Real, Portugal in 1977. Sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Porto.  Master in Fine  Piet Zwart Institute, Willem de Kooning Academy, Hogeschool Rotterdam, the Netherlands, 2003.

Teaches visual arts at the Superior School of Education, Viseu. Collaborates with the group for cultural exchange IDENTIDADES, in the project Deslocações for the Conceição das Crioulas community, Pernanbuco, Brazil.

Member of several national and international art collectives, such as ZOiNA, Caldeira 213, ROOM, CLANITICA, Ateliers Mentol, Switch Metaphors and Palindromes.

Manages the blogs All My Independent Women, on art and gender, and Porto Público on public space, politics and power; and the exhibition space “Espaço gesto”, Porto.

Exhibiting her work since 1999, on solo and collective exhibitions, she is happier when working collectively.

 Her works sometimes strikingly visible sometimes no more than a rumour is concerned on the social constructions that we make and reassert everyday, in the attempt to question and even undermine these constructions. Being those construction gender related, or about European Identity or even the privatization of the public sphere and the notion of citizenship. The viewer, participant or passer-by is normally trapped by the anodyne visual and forms of her work that usually carry less innocent content, into  pondering his values and pre-conceptions with what is presented by her work.

Oporto's colorful market Located in the heart of the city, this noisy and exuberant market is a sight not to be missed. Located in a two-tier covered building, it sells everything from fresh fruit to household goods. Paralelamente à exposição patente no Museu, que pela primeira vez apresenta ao público uma parcela muito significativa da sua Colecção, Serralves exibe no centro do Porto um conjunto de vídeos e filmes realizados por artistas portugueses e internacionais entre os anos 1960 e a actualidade. Estas obras cruzam diferentes gerações e reúnem diversas preocupações estéticas, permitindo avaliar a importância daqueles suportes nas várias redefinições a que a arte foi sendo sujeita nas últimas quatro décadas.

In parallel with the exhibition featured at the Museum, which for the first time presents a very significant part of its Collection, in downtown Porto Serralves will show a series of videos and films directed by Portuguese and international artists between the 1960s and now. These works cross different generations and bring together different aesthetic concerns, thereby allowing for an evaluation of the relevance of such supports in relation to the multiple redefinitions that art has undergone in the last four decades.

O São João do Porto é uma festa popular, de origem pagã, que tem lugar de 23 para 24 de Junho na cidade do Porto.

Trata-se de uma festa cheia de tradições, das quais se destacam o lançamento de balões de ar quente, os martelos de plástico usados para bater nas cabeças das pessoas que passam, os alhos-porros, os ramos de cidreira e de limonete, usados para pôr na cara das pessoas que passam, o que é bastante desagradável. Existem, ainda, os tradicionais saltos sobre as fogueirasespalhadas pela cidade, normalmente nos bairros mais tradicionais; os vasos de manjericos com versos populares são uma presença constante nesta grande festa e o tradicional fogo de artifício à meia-noite, junto ao Rio Douro e à ponte Luíz I que faz as delícias dos milhares de residentes e visitantes que chegam de todo o mundo para assistir. O fogo de artifício chega a durar mais de 40 minutos, estando ao nível dos melhores no mundo, e decorre no meio do rio em barcos especialmente preparados, sendo acompanhado por música num espectáculo multimédia muito belo e digno de se ver.

Além de tudo isto, existem vários arraiais populares, em bairros tradicionais como Fontainhas, Miragaia,Massarelos, entre outros, dando mais animação e brilho durante a noite. Nos arraiais, normalmente, existem concertos com diversos cantores populares acompanhados, quase sempre, por boa comida, em especial, grelhados de sardinhas e carnes. A festa dura até às três ou quatro horas da madrugada, quando a maior parte das pessoas regressa a casa. Os mais resistentes, normalmente os mais jovens, percorrem toda a marginal desde aRibeira até à Foz do Douro onde terminam a noite na praia, aguardando pelo nascer do sol.

Every year, on the 24th June, the city of Porto, in the north of Portugal, becomes lively and seemingly crazy. Thousands of people come to the city centre and to the most traditional neighborhoods to pay a tribute to Saint John, in a party that mixes sacred and profane traditions.

The festivities have been held in the city for more than six centuries, yet it was during the XIX century that Saint John's day became impregnated in the city's culture and assumed the status of the city's most important festival.

In June 2004, a journalist from The Guardian commented that "Porto's Festa de São João is one of Europe's liveliest street festivals, yet it is relatively unknown outside the country" ^[3].

In fact, the party starts early in the evening of 23 June and usually lasts until the morning of 24 June. The traditional attractions of the night include street concerts, popular dancing parties, jumping over flames, eating barbecued sardines and meat, drinking wine and releasing illuminated flame-propelled balloons over Porto's summer sky.

At midnight the partygoers make a short break to look at the sky at Saint John's firework spectacle. The show is increasingly sophisticated with the fireworks being associated with themes and multimedia shows. The party has sacred roots but is also mixed with pagan traditions, with the fireworks embodying the spirit of tribute to the Sun.

One could expect the firework to be the climax and mark the end of the festivities. Yet, it is quite common for citizens of Porto, with all ages, to keep celebrating until 3 or 4 in the morning. Younger people take it even a step further. They walk from Porto's riverside core - Ribeira (for instance the parish of São Nicolau (Porto)- up to the seaside in Foz (parishes of Foz do Douro and Nevogilde (Porto)) or in the nearby suburb of Matosinhos where they wait for the sunrise near the sea.

Wine Review: This very dark ruby wine opens with an old world styled nose. Some cherry, earth, and light oak are present. On the palate, this wine is medium bodied, balanced, juicy, with raspberry like flavors with a touch of spice. The finish is quite dry and nicely extended. I would pair this wine with beef bourguignon. Enjoy !

Paula Lopes nasceu no Porto em 1974

Em 2000 finaliza o curso de Design de Comunicação, na ESAD, Matosinhos.

No mesmo ano inicia-se na Web e Print em Braga, onde fica 5 anos. Actualmente vive e trabalha em Lisboa como Web Designer (www.view.pt).

Participou em várias exposições colectivas e individuais de pintura,  instalação de vídeo e ilustração. Mantêm relação próxima com algumas áreas, nomeadamente a fotografia, ilustração, entre outras, que introduz nas artes plásticas.

 

Paula Lopes was born in 1974, in Oporto

In 2000 finishes the degree in Communication Design, in ESAD, Matosinhos.

In the some year, start on the Web e Print in Braga City, where remains 5 years. Currently lives and works in Lisbon as a Web Designer (www.view.pt).

Participated in several collective and individual exhibitions of painting, video installation and illustration. Maintain close relationship with some areas, including photo, illustration, and others, introducing it in to the plastic arts.

Paulo Martins nasceu em 1981 e fotografa desde 1992.

Tem desenvolvido uma abordagem própria no que toca à impressão que as suas imagens transmitem sobre a pessoa fotografada. Procura realçar virtudes que estão além da aparência.

Na sua mistura de ironia e gentileza procura representar algumas camadas de intimidade das pessoas sem que se sinta intrusão nem desrespeito. O processo de aquisição pode ser imediato ou demorar muito tempo. Esta procura traz alguma solenidade teatral a momentos banais do dia-a-dia e cria uma ligação sentimental ao mundo e às pessoas que o habitam.

Actualmente fotografa maioritariamente retrato. Frequenta o Mestrado em Comunicação Audiovisual do Instituto Politécnico do Porto, especialização em fotografia documental.

É responsável pela fotografia da campanha eleitoral da Elisa Ferreira à Câmara Municipal do Porto, imagem fotográfica da escola de negócios EGP/UPBS. Fotografou para a Delta e Casa da Música entre outros.

Paulo has developed an approach with regard to the impression that his images convey about the person photographed. He looks for virtues beyond appearance.

In his mixture of irony and gentleness, Paulo seeks to represent some layers of intimacy without intrusion or prejudice. The acquisition process can be immediate or take a long time. This demand brings some theatrical solemnity the mundane moments of the day to day and creates an emotional connection to the world and the people that live in it.

Currently he is mostly a portrait photographer. Attends the Masters Degree in Communication Audiovisual of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto, specialising in documentary photography. 

Is responsible for the photographic work of the election campaign of Elisa Ferreira to the City Hall of Porto. Worked for EGP / UPBS, university of Porto Business School. Photographed for the Delta Casa da Música among others.

O encontro de duas figuras já lendárias da experimentação artística, nomeadamente a sonora, unidos aqui pela dedicação ao violino. Tony Conrad é, para além de ícone do cinema experimental, um dos pioneiros do minimalismo norte-americano, tendo integrado no início dos anos 1960 o Theatre of Eternal Music (conhecido como Dream Syndicate) ao lado de La Monte Young, John Cale, Angus MacLise e Marian Zazeela. Desenvolveu uma exploração extensa do violino ao nível do timbre, da distorção e da dissonância focando o seu trabalho ao nível da microtonalidade, geralmente na forma de longas massas sonoras.
O violino foi também um dos primeiros instrumentos de eleição de Genesis P. Orridge, desde o tempo dos Throbbing Gristtle, especialmente na variante eléctrica, transportando-o posteriormente para os seus vários projectos, entre os quais Psychic TV e Thee Majesty. O trabalho de P. Orridge tem sido tanto musical como sobre ideias de libertação de imposições normativas aos mais vários níveis, sejam eles música, comportamento ou sexualidade. 
O primeiro encontro destes dois gigantes do experimentalismo teve lugar em Janeiro de 2009 na Issue Project Room em Nova Iorque, e tal como acontecerá em Serralves, contou com a colaboração do percussionista Morrison Edley dos PTV3 (a mais recente formação dos Psychic TV).

This is an encounter of two already legendary figures of artistic experimentation - namely sound experimentation - linked by a shared dedication to the violin. Besides being an icon of experimental cinema Tony Conrad is one of the pioneers of North American minimalism. At the onset of the 1960s he was a member of the Theatre of Eternal Music (known as Dream Syndicate) alongside La Monte Young, John Cale, Angus MacLise, and Marian Zazeela. Conrad developed an extensive exploration of the violin in terms of tone, distortion and dissonance. His work focused on micro-tonality, generally in the form of long masses of sound. 
The violin, particularly the electric variant, was also one of the first instruments of choice for Genesis P. Orridge since the times of the Throbbing Gristtle. The instrument would later carry him into several projects, such as Psychic TV and Thee Majesty. P. Orridge’s work has been both musical and ideological in its concern with liberation from different normative impositions in music, behaviour or sexuality.  
The first encounter of these two giants of experimentalism took place in January 2009 at the Issue Project Room in New York and, as now in Serralves, they counted with the collaboration of percussionist Morrison Edley of PTV3 (the most recent line-up of Psychic TV).
